Uno tra i più influenti locali, l’Upstage Club, grazie alla passione musicale del suo gestore, dopo la chiusura rimaneva a disposizione dei musicisti per improvvisazioni e jam session, nelle quali il giovane Bruce ebbe presto la possibilità di farsi notare.
A notarlo furono Steve Van Zandt, Danny Federici e Vini Lopez, che lo invitarono a formare con loro un gruppo. Tra il 1969 e il 1971 questo gruppo suonò con diversi nomi, inizialmente Child, poi Steel Mill, successivamente Dr.Zoom and the Sonic Boom.
